I've been trying to figure that out for years being selfless I guess? going all out to save people no matter what. I thought maybe I became a hero when I died to save someone but if it was someone else, I dont know if I'd agree

maybe it's because you don't have an answer, then. the "no matter what" part makes it tough. people care about you and don't want you to risk it all or die for no good reason
Saving people is a good reason in of itself. If you have to come up with some alternate excuse, like 'to become famous' then it doesn't much qualify for selfless. In an ideal world where things were different, I wouldn't care about the reasons someone has if they saved me. That they wanted to would be enough.
